The Rule of Law and European Values in the Modern Ages:
The challenges presented by terrorism, human trafficking, people smuggling and illicit financial transactions (3rd edition)

The School of Law of UCLan Cyprus is pleased to announce the online intensive course on “The challenges presented by terrorism, human trafficking, people smuggling and illicit trafficking transactions”.

Against the background formed by the prevalence of terrorism, the ongoing conflicts in the Greater Middle East, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, other ongoing or frozen conflicts, human trafficking, people smuggling, illicit financial activities and multiple other threats to the rule of law in modern Europe, this 10-hour online course considers the rationale behind, legal basis and practical consequences of the responses to these illicit activities at the national, regional, pan-European and global levels. In addition, the course seeks to familiarise participants with the rule of law and other key concepts in regular use within or beyond the relevant literature.

The titles of the session are the following:

Session 1: Emerging threats to the rule of law and other European values in the UK and the EU: An Overview (6 September 2024, 15:00-17:00 EEST)

Session 2: Countering terrorism in the UK and the EU: Is the Eastern Mediterranean the ‘Achilles Heel’ of Europe? (11 September 2024, 15:00-17:00 EEST)

Session 3: Countering human trafficking and smuggling in Europe: the case of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean (13 September 2024, 15:00-17:00 EEST)

Session 4: Prosecuting human trafficking cases in Cyprus: challenges and lessons learned (18 September 2024, 15:00-17:00 EEST)

Session 5: Countering illicit financial activities in the UK and the EU: Is the Eastern Mediterranean the ‘Trojan Horse’ of Europe? (20 September 2024, 15:00-17:00 EEST)

At the end of each 2-hour online session, the participation of lawyers practising in the Republic of Cyprus will be certified in accordance with the CPD requirements of the Cyprus Bar Association.
