CRoLEV Congratulates Prof. Stéphanie Laulhé Shaelou on her Appointment as Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the EU
The Centre for the Rule of Law and European Values (CRoLEV) warmly congratulates Professor Stéphanie Laulhé Shaelou, on her appointment and swearing-in as Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
Professor Laulhé Shaelou officially assumed office on 13 July 2026, following her appointment by the Representatives of the Governments of the Member States of the EU to succeed Advocate General Nicholas Emiliou for the remainder of his mandate until 6 October 2027. Nicholas Emiliou was elected Judge at the European Court of Human Rights in January 2026 and departed from the CJEU in April 2026.
During the formal ceremony held at the Court in Luxembourg, Stephanie Laulhé Shaelou was sworn in before the President and Members of the Court, marking the beginning of her tenure as one of the Court’s eleven Advocates General. The President of the CJEU, Mr Koen Lenaerts, welcomed Professor Laulhé Shaelou’s arrival at the Court, highlighting the importance of her expertise, independence, and commitment to European law and values as she undertakes her new responsibilities as Advocate General.
This appointment represents a remarkable personal achievement and an important milestone for Cyprus and the wider European legal community. It is a testament to Professor Laulhé Shaelou’s distinguished academic career, her recognised expertise in EU law, and her longstanding commitment to promoting the rule of law, European values, and judicial excellence.
As Director of CRoLEV, Professor Laulhé Shaelou played a pivotal role in advancing our Centre’s mission of fostering research, dialogue, education, and policy engagement on issues relating to the rule of law, democracy, and European integration.
In light of her appointment to the CJEU, Professor Laulhé Shaelou has taken a leave of absence from her role as Director of CRoLEV for the duration of her mandate as Advocate General. During this period, the Centre will continue its activities under its established governance arrangements, remaining fully committed to its mission of promoting the rule of law, democratic governance, and European values through research, education, and public engagement.
